Hemingway once remarked, "Wine is one of the most civilized things in the world...and it offers a greater range for enjoyment and appreciation than, possibly, any other purely sensory thing." I can't think of a better way to describe today's wine. Hailing from Ribeiro (not to be confused with Ribeira Sacra, or the Ribera del Duero) in Northwest Spain, this Galician red is a great mediation wine for those who love Northern Rhone Syrah. Comprised of an eclectic local blend of Caiño Longo, Brancellao, and Tintilla, this wine offers layer after layer of complexity. Notes of turned soil, fresh wild blueberry, wild flower, smoked sagebrush, blackberry bramble, smoked meat, violet, clove, allspice, and Christmas cake. It evokes an almost Proustian memory of holidays past. Enjoy on its own or with a nice pan-fried lamb chop.
