Thursday steak night wouldn’t be complete without the indomitable 2014 Pintia by Spanish wine giant Vega Sicilia. Founded in 1864, Vega Sicilia became one of the original “First Growths” of the Iberian peninsula, producing some of the worlds most iconic, age-worthy wines. Branching out from their traditional estate home of Ribero del Duero, the family holding expanding to include Tempranillo from the region of Toro. Set further west along the Duero river, near the Portuguese border, and not terribly far from where Port is made. This region produces a more muscular, austere expression of the varietal. The 2014 Pintia exemplifies the tradition of hot, ripe, full bodied Tempranillo while still maintaining balance and an insane amount of complexity.
In the glass you’ll find a deep, almost sanguine ruby core moving to a magenta rim. The nose smacks you in the face with loads of dark raspberry, overripe blackberry, cassis, and sweet cedar wood. Rounded out by layers of violet, raisinated damson, turned earth, and wood smoke. The tannin and acid structure maintain a perfect equilibrium that allow this wine to age gracefully in the cellar for at least 5 more years.
Decant for 30 minutes and enjoy with a sirloin seasoned with salt, pepper, and thyme butter.
